Cover-letter slop is not the same as general AI slop. The tells here are application boilerplate: self-introduction formulas, generic enthusiasm, and adjectives that describe you without evidence. A recruiter reads hundreds of these, so the pattern is obvious to them long before any detector is involved.

Will a recruiter reject my cover letter for sounding AI-written?
Most will not run a detector. They do not have to. A cover letter built from the phrases above reads as interchangeable with every other application, which is a worse outcome than being flagged: it gives the reader no reason to pick you. The fix is the same either way — replace each generic claim with one specific thing only you could write.
What is the difference between a cliché and an AI tell in a cover letter?
Very little, and that is the point. Most cover-letter AI tells are pre-existing clichés that models reproduce because the training data is full of them. "Hard-working team player" was weak in 2010. A model just makes it faster to produce, so now every application has it.
Can I still use ChatGPT to draft a cover letter?
